This homemade fire cider is a potent, spicy, and tangy tonic designed to support your immune system during the fall and winter months. Made with fresh horseradish, ginger, turmeric, garlic, and raw apple cider vinegar, it’s a simple and effective wellness ritual.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium horseradish root, peeled and coarsely chopped (about ½ cup)
  • 1 medium onion, coarsely chopped (about 1 cup)
  • 10 cloves garlic, smashed and coarsely chopped
  • 1 (2-inch) piece fresh ginger, thinly sliced (about ¼ cup)
  • 1 (2-inch) piece fresh turmeric, thinly sliced (about ¼ cup)
  • 1 jalapeño pepper, sliced in half (seeds optional for more heat)
  • 1 lemon, thinly sliced
  • 2 sprigs fresh rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Raw apple cider vinegar, enough to cover the ingredients (about 3–4 cups)
  • ¼ cup raw honey, or more to taste

Instructions

  1. Prep your produce (15 minutes): Wash all vegetables and herbs thoroughly. Peel the horseradish root and coarsely chop into small chunks. Coarsely chop the onion. Smash the garlic cloves and roughly chop. Slice the ginger and turmeric into thin rounds. Slice the lemon into thin rounds. Set everything aside.
  2. Layer the ingredients in the jar (5 minutes): In a clean 1-quart mason jar, add the chopped horseradish, onion, garlic, ginger, and turmeric. Tuck in the jalapeño slices and lemon rounds. Add the rosemary sprigs, black peppercorns, and cayenne pepper. Do not pack too tightly.
  3. Pour in the vinegar (2 minutes): Place a funnel in the mouth of the jar. Slowly pour the raw apple cider vinegar over the ingredients until they are completely submerged, leaving about an inch of vinegar above the solids. Tap the jar gently to release air bubbles.
  4. Seal and shake (1 minute): Screw the lid on tightly and shake vigorously for about 30 seconds.
  5. The steeping process (2-4 weeks): Store the jar in a cool, dark place. Shake the jar once a day, every day.
  6. The taste test (Day 14): After two weeks, taste the fire cider. If you want a stronger flavor, let it steep for another week or two. I usually let mine go for a full 28 days.
  7. Strain and sweeten (10 minutes): Place a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth over a glass measuring cup or pitcher. Pour the entire contents through the strainer. Press down on the solids to extract all liquid. Discard the solids.
  8. Add the honey (2 minutes): Pour the strained liquid back into a clean jar or bottle. Add the raw honey to taste, starting with ¼ cup, and stir until dissolved.
  9. Store and enjoy (1 minute): Seal the bottle. Store in the refrigerator for up to 6 months.

Notes

Chop ingredients into small, bite-sized pieces for better extraction. Do not rush the steeping process; the flavor improves significantly after 2 weeks. Use raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with ‘the mother’ for probiotic benefits. Adjust honey to taste. Store in the refrigerator; shake before each use as honey may settle.
