This cozy crockpot hot chocolate is a warm, creamy drink made with whole milk, heavy cream, semi-sweet chocolate chips, and a touch of vanilla, topped with a fluffy peppermint whipped cream. It’s the perfect comfort drink for cold winter days, holiday parties, or quiet snowy nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • Crushed candy canes or peppermint candies for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the unsweetened cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and salt to prevent lumps.
  2. Pour the whole milk and heavy cream into a 4 to 6 quart slow cooker. Whisk in the cocoa powder mixture until smooth.
  3. Stir in the semi-sweet chocolate chips.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally every 30 to 45 minutes, until the chocolate chips are fully melted and the mixture is steaming hot and smooth.
  5. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. While the hot chocolate cooks, chill a mixing bowl in the freezer for 10 minutes. Add the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and peppermint extract. Beat with an electric mixer on medium-high speed until soft peaks form, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  7. Ladle the hot chocolate into mugs. Top each mug with a generous dollop of peppermint whipped cream and sprinkle with crushed candy canes or peppermint candies. Serve immediately.

Notes

For best results, use whole milk and heavy cream; low-fat milk will result in a thin texture. Stir occasionally to prevent a skin from forming. The hot chocolate can be kept on the ‘warm’ setting for up to 4 hours. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated on the stovetop or in the microwave. The peppermint whipped cream can be made up to 24 hours in advance.
