A small-batch, comforting dessert featuring tart apples, rich salted caramel, and a crunchy brown butter topping, perfectly sized for two servings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium tart apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and sliced
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp fine sea salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup salted caramel sauce
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Butter or oil spray for greasing ramekins

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Peel, core, and slice apples into 1/4-inch thick slices. Place slices in the bottom of two 6-ounce ramekins.
  3. Drizzle 2 tablespoons of salted caramel sauce and 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract over the apples in each ramekin. Gently toss to coat.
  4. In a small mixing bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Mix until it resembles coarse sand.
  5. Add the softened butter to the dry ingredients and stir until the mixture is crumbly and moist.
  6. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples in each ramekin, pressing down gently to create a cohesive layer.
  7. Place ramekins on a baking sheet and bake for 18-22 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  8. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving to allow the caramel to thicken.

Notes

Use a baking sheet to catch any caramel drips. Ensure apples are sliced uniformly for even cooking. Use softened butter for the topping to ensure a crunchy texture, not melted. Let the crisp cool for 5 minutes before eating to avoid burning your tongue. The topping may soften in the fridge; reheat in the oven to restore crunch.
