This turkey and sweet potato chili is a cozy, one-pot meal that’s perfect for cold nights. It’s naturally creamy, packed with flavor, and comes together in about 45 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced (about 1 ½ cups)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground turkey (93% lean recommended)
  • 1 large sweet potato, peeled and diced into ½-inch cubes (about 3 cups)
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 (15-ounce) can fire-roasted diced tomatoes, with juices
  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Plain Greek yogurt or sour cream (for topping)
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for topping)
  • Diced avocado (for topping)
  • Shredded cheddar cheese (for topping)
  • Lime wedges (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat. Add diced onion and cook for 4-5 minutes until soft and translucent. Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  2. Add ground turkey to the pot. Break it up with a wooden spoon and cook for 5-7 minutes until no longer pink, allowing it to brown in spots.
  3. Sprinkle chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, cinnamon, oregano, cayenne (if using), salt, and pepper over the turkey. Stir constantly for about 1 minute until spices are fragrant and toasted.
  4. Stir in diced sweet potato and red bell pepper. Add fire-roasted tomatoes (with juices), tomato sauce, and chicken broth. Stir, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot.
  5. Increase heat to high and bring to a gentle boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20-25 minutes until sweet potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork. Stir occasionally.
  6. Remove lid. Using a potato masher or the back of a wooden spoon, gently mash about a quarter to a third of the sweet potato chunks right in the pot to thicken the broth. Stir to combine.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt, lime juice, or cumin as desired. Let simmer uncovered for another 5 minutes if a thicker consistency is preferred.
  8. Ladle chili into bowls and top with Greek yogurt, cilantro, avocado, cheese, and a squeeze of lime. Serve hot.

Notes

Don’t skip toasting the spices in step 3—it builds deep flavor. Let the chili rest for 10 minutes before serving for best flavor. Leftovers taste even better the next day. For a vegetarian version, swap turkey for black beans or lentils and use vegetable broth.
