A playful and delicious Halloween snack featuring hot dogs wrapped in flaky pastry strips with a gooey cheese center, baked until golden brown.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 to 10 standard beef or pork frankfurters
  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry (thawed) or 1 can refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 8 ounces mozzarella or cheddar cheese, cut into strips
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Optional: Dijon mustard, ketchup, or pickled jalapeños for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and let it heat for at least 10 minutes.
  2. Prepare the dough: If using puff pastry, let it thaw until pliable but cold and roll out slightly. If using crescent rolls, unroll and separate triangles.
  3. Slice cheese into strips matching the length and width of the hot dogs.
  4. Place a cheese strip in the center of a hot dog. Cut dough into 1-inch wide strips.
  5. Wrap the dough around the hot dog and cheese, leaving small gaps to create a ‘mummy’ effect. Press ends firmly to secure.
  6. Arrange wrapped hot dogs on parchment-lined baking sheets, leaving space for expansion.
  7. Brush the tops generously with the egg wash mixture.
  8. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle evenly with garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika.
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes until dough is puffed, golden brown, and cheese is oozing.
  10. Cool for 2-3 minutes before serving to allow cheese to settle.

Notes

Ensure dough is cold for best flakiness. Let hot dogs sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes before wrapping to prevent dough cracking. If dough browns too quickly, cover loosely with foil. Do not microwave leftovers as it makes dough soggy; reheat in oven at 350°F.
