These spooky mummy wrapped pigs in a blanket are a game-changer for Halloween entertaining. They combine the nostalgic comfort of a classic appetizer with the sheer joy of creating something that looks like it crawled out of a sarcophagus.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (12 ounces) cocktail sausages
  • 1 can (8 ounces) crescent roll dough (sheet-style, not perforated triangles)
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 large egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line your baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. Unroll the crescent roll sheet onto a clean cutting board. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough into thin strips, about 1/2-inch (1.25 cm) wide. You should get roughly 20-24 strips from one sheet.
  3. Take one cocktail sausage and place it at the end of a dough strip. Start wrapping the strip around the sausage, slightly overlapping each layer as you go. Leave a small gap at the top of the sausage for the ‘face’ where the eyes will go. Tuck the end of the strip underneath the sausage to secure it. Repeat with all the sausages. Place each wrapped mummy on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about an inch of space between them.
  4. Dip a toothpick or the tip of a knife into the yellow mustard and place two small dots on the exposed sausage ‘face’.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk the egg with a tablespoon of water until smooth. Using a pastry brush, gently brush the egg wash over the dough strips. Be careful not to brush over the mustard eyes. If using sesame seeds, sprinkle them on now while the egg wash is still wet.
  6. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the dough is puffed and golden brown.
  7. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the mummies cool on the pan for 2-3 minutes. Then transfer them to a cooling rack. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

Keep the dough cold for easier handling. Don’t over-wrap the sausages—2-3 layers of dough is plenty. For a spicier version, use chorizo-style mini sausages. For a vegetarian option, use plant-based sausages. To make ahead, assemble up to 24 hours in advance, refrigerate, and add mustard eyes and egg wash just before baking.
