A simple and delicious pulled pork recipe using only pork shoulder and root beer cooked low and slow in a slow cooker for tender, juicy results with subtle sweetness.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 to 4 pounds pork shoulder (pork butt), bone-in or boneless
  • 12 ounces root beer (classic full-flavored brand like Barq’s or A&W)

Instructions

  1. Trim any large pieces of excess fat from the pork shoulder if you prefer leaner meat. Pat it dry with paper towels to help the flavors absorb better.
  2. Place the pork shoulder flat in the bottom of your slow cooker.
  3. Slowly pour 12 ounces of root beer evenly over the pork, covering about halfway but not submerging it.
  4. Cover and cook on low heat for 8 to 10 hours, or on high for 4 to 5 hours if short on time.
  5. Check for tenderness by poking with a fork around the 8-hour mark; cook longer if needed.
  6. Shred the pork using two forks or tongs directly in the slow cooker and stir to mix with the cooking juices.
  7. Serve the pulled pork on buns, rice, or with your favorite sides, drizzling some cooking juices on top.

Notes

Pat pork dry before cooking to improve flavor absorption. Avoid lifting the slow cooker lid during cooking to maintain heat. Optional searing before slow cooking adds depth of flavor. Use full-flavored root beer for best caramel notes. If sauce is too thin after shredding, reduce it by simmering on stovetop. Leftovers keep well refrigerated up to 4 days or frozen up to 3 months.
