Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent rolls
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 baking dish.
  2. Peel apples, cut in half, remove cores, and cut each half into 4 wedges (8 wedges total).
  3. In a small bowl, mix 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon.
  4. Separate crescent rolls into 8 triangles. Place an apple wedge at the wide end of each triangle and roll up, tucking the point under.
  5. Place dumplings seam-side down in the prepared dish. Brush with melted butter.
  6. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the dumplings.
  7. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 1/2 cup butter, 3/4 cup brown sugar, and 1/2 cup water. Stir until butter melts and sugar dissolves (2-3 minutes). Remove from heat and stir in vanilla, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and a pinch of salt.
  8. Pour warm sauce over dumplings. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden and bubbling.
  9. Let rest 5 minutes before serving. Spoon pan sauce over each serving.

Notes

For best results, use firm tart apples like Granny Smith. Grease the pan well to prevent sticking. Check dumplings at 20 minutes to avoid burning. Serve warm within 15 minutes for optimal flakiness. Leftovers keep in the fridge for up to 3 days; reheat in oven or microwave.
