A quick and easy sloppy joes recipe ready in about 10 minutes, perfect for busy weeknights. This classic dish features a tangy tomato sauce with ground beef served on soft buns.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 3/4 cup (6 fl oz / 180ml) tomato ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup (2 fl oz / 60ml) water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 soft hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Heat your skillet over medium-high heat (about 375°F / 190°C) and add the ground beef. Cook for 4-5 minutes, breaking it up with your spatula until it’s no longer pink and starts to brown.
  2. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the beef. Stir and cook for another 2-3 minutes until the onions are soft and translucent.
  3. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
  4. Stir in the tomato ketchup, tomato paste, and water. Mix well to combine all the flavors.
  5. Add Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir everything together, making sure the seasonings are evenly distributed.
  6. Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add a splash of water if the sauce looks too thick.
  7. While the sauce simmers, toast your hamburger buns lightly.
  8. Once the sauce has thickened and smells irresistible, spoon a generous amount onto each bun and serve immediately.

Notes

Do not overcrowd the pan to allow beef to brown properly. Toast buns to prevent sogginess. Adjust seasoning at the end to taste. If sauce is too tangy, add a pinch more brown sugar. Avoid overcooking beef to keep it juicy.
